Stoopid People

South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford released another statement today, this time blaming her husband’s affair on the declining moral values in America.

I really shouldn’t be surprised by this–in fact, I should be shocked that it’s taken so long for some conservative asshat to actually say it. I really have no words, the first line of the article says it all. That, and the fact that Rush Limbaugh rushed to add his two cents,

“It’s finally happened,” said Rush Limbaugh, conservative radio personality. “America, I’ve been warning you for years that gay marriage would destroy the American family and look… there they are, a husband, wife, and four children — destroyed.  When is this going to stop America? When will the liberals be satisfied?  When all the marriages break up? This wasn’t Mark Sanford’s fault, this was Ted Kennedy’s fault.  Sanford didn’t cheapen the value of marriage, he was victimized by the cheapening of marriage.”

So marriage wasn’t cheap before states began allowing same-sex couples to legally marry? Maybe they don’t know any divorced people…

I don’t often follow the headlines on my Google Reader, but I followed this one and am glad I did. The amount of money taken out of my check every week is ludicrous, but I’d be a lot less upset about it if taxation was equal across the board and if more of my tax money was actually going to good causes like those discussed below rather than bailing out the likes of GM or buying new toilet seats for the White House.

Give me a break. Instead of tossing tea bags for the cameras, the Fox phonies ought to go to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. There they would find better, braver men who have truly sacrificed for their country. They deserve nothing but the best — not the shameful and shoddy conditions they endured during the Bush administration.

You want something to protest? How ’bout protesting how little we give back to our veterans? Or how ’bout protesting that the entire budget of the National Cancer Institute (where government researchers battle a disease that will strike half of all men and a third of all women) is 0.03 percent of what we gave the bandits at American International Group alone? Oh, but veterans benefits and cancer research might cost money. It might require — dare I say it? — paying taxes.

If the whiners at Fox News want to advertise their selfishness, they are free to do so. But please don’t dress it up as patriotism. Patriotism is putting your country ahead of yourself — which is the precise opposite of what the tea party plutocrats are doing./a>.

Okay, not the scouts themselves, but my ‘co-leaders’ (and I use the term VERY loosely).

The troop I am involved with is a multi-level troop (5-17 year olds) that is affiliated with Campus Girl Scouts. The only reason there are leaders outside of CGS themselves is because of the number of girls. Because of this, they need to be active in the troop and we need to be active in their activities. Yet I never know about what CGS is doing or planning until almost the last minute. Case in point, an email received by the 3 leaders about a play “CGS would LOVE for us to be able to help out at” being put on Saturday. Um, hello, you KNOW we have a fundraising activity that day, and way to let us know on Tuesday about an event Saturday when we have limited access to contacting our girls (one of the issues with having an inner-city troop). Turns out one of my co-leaders knew about it for our meeting 2 weeks ago, but had a family emergency and couldn’t attend the meeting. Fine, awesome. But where was the email/text/phone call to either myself or M about the event?

It’s all about keeping the lines of communication open and not counting on one person alone to be the liaison. And when I suggest the leaders being included in minutes from the CGS meetings, I get told I’m “being demanding and that we have more important issues.”

Next year I will not be involved with a troop that falls under CGS.

About 8:30 yesterday morning I decided to risk driving into the lake that Lexington St had become in order to drive through the parking lot to the other side. I almost made it too, but some asshat in a pickup went careening by me, sending a wave over the top of my car–and I stalled. My car was literally floating around in the wake of this guy’s truck, and the wakes of other asshats that insisted on driving through the lake despite seeing several stranded cars. I called AAA and was on the phone with them for a good20 minutes as the water is pouring into my car–it got as high as my front seats by the time I was done, but the rain was coming down too hard for me to want to try getting out while still talking to AAA.Getting out of the car proved to also be a problem–the water was actually rushing, and it was almost up to my waist. I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous and incredibly stressed out about the whole thing.

Fast forward an hour and a half of chatting with the plaza employees, other stranded motorists and the fire people and AAA picked me up. The tow guy told me that the 40 of them on duty couldn’t keep up with all the calls–and they aren’t the only tow people in town! It was a mess out there, and was for a long time. I had him bring me to work so I had a nice safe, dry place to talk to the insurance company and worked out all the details.

Thank the gods that my insurance is covering the damage (minus my deductible), and my car is currently at the shop (I’m waiting to hear from them regarding the damage and estimates and all). When I finally got into work my boss said that I have the worst luck with my car. I’m starting to agree with her and am seriously contemplating getting rid of it when I get to grad school if I can get a live-on position.
