Stress

I REALLY need opinions and advice.

If my boss agrees to a reduced schedule, do I stay at my current job making over $20/hour and keeping health benefits, but have to commute 30-45 minutes each way 5 days a week and up to Boston 3 days a week.

OR, do I keep the Work Study that I was granted, pick up an assistantship or two, and only have to worry about commuting into Boston 3-4 days per week but have to take the school insurance and probably not make as much take-home pay.

This past weekend was absolutely amazing. Friday night userinfowtbrosie decided she wanted to decorate eggs. I was totally game, although it turns out her idea of egg decorating is a little different from mine–she uses wax to draw on the eggs before dying them. When she explained, I got a little nervous, but we had a ton of fun, and my eggs turned out pretty good.

Saturday she worked, but it gave me time to put together an Easter basket and hide it–she had to follow some clues to find it, then she sent ME on an egg hunt in her living room–she’s so cute. We made dinner for my family that evening, so hopefully my parents are satisfied with seeing me for a little while since they’ve seen me the last few weeks.

Except me getting an absolutely disgusting cold sore, everything was all hunky-dory until today. I get a call from userinfowtbrosie–her car had been robbed, they got her GPS and a bunch of change. Sucks, but she could have lost her SSN card, or checkbook (both of which were recently taken out of the car) or client files. The thief obviously wasn’t that thorough because her iPod was still in her gym bag, which I  think was untouched completely, although I’m not 100% about that. And this evening after I got home from work, I discover that my phone isn’t in my bag!!! I left it on my desk like an idiot.

So, was this a bad end to a wonderful weekend, or a bad start to a new week?

As you all probably know by now, I’m planning on moving in with userinfowtbrosie as soon as my current roommates find a replacement. I feel bad leaving them, and hate leaving Somerville, but it’s really the best option for me right now. Needless to say, I have less than a month to get everything done, so in true Jessi-fashion, I’m putting together a checklist of stuff to do over the next couple of weeks. Suggestions/advice is GREATLY appreciated! And by that, I mean, PLEASE comment with suggestions and advice!

  • Talk to those friends with trucks/vans to see if I can recruit them into helping or at least lending their vehicle (think of a means of payment)
  • Wednesday, talk to Dad about possible storage @ the house
  • Pack and begin moving clothes, books to be read and bathroom stuff to userinfowtbrosie’s house
  • If can’t store @ Dad’s house, rent a storage unit
  • If can’t borrow enough trucks/vans and drivers, contact Penske
  • Pack bedroom, kitchen, odds and ends
  • Move at least 1 bureau to Dad’s
  • Move 1 bureau, nightstand and shrine touserinfowtbrosie’s
  • Move crap I don’t need to Dad’s or storage unit

So, I spent most of yesterday updating my blog theme, yet never actually got around to making a post (I did just post a wicked funny link to something in the Boston Globe–a Google map of Boston potholes that we can add to!). This weekend was a mixed bag. Between the cluster-fuck that is Girl Scout cookie pick-up, angry professors and not being able to properly communicate with my girl, I wound up having 2 anxiety attacks, skipped Friday’s class and bailed on friends for the Super bowl. Ah well. userinfowtbrosie was awesome as usual, and totally patient with me while I was flipping out. It was nice having someone willing and able to take care of me when I needed it.

We DID watch the game though, and although I was kind of falling asleep during the first half (hey, I was still in recovery from my anxiety attack…), I woke up and got into it during the last quarter. It was a really well-played game, although the refs were being asshats.

So I have virtually no idea what to get anyone for Christmas this year. I’m working on my boss’ gift, but am not sure I’ll get it done in time to give her before we break. As for my other three co-workers, I’m clueless. Anyone have ideas for 2 women and a guy that are under $15? Maybe something I can make since I’m making my boss’ gift?

Mom should be mostly set, I just have to actually work no the gift. Dad and my uncle are another story altogether though. My brother and I had talked about getting a snowblower last year, but that kinda fell through, so I’ve thought about getting one this year, but really don’t have the money for anything that great (anyone know how well the electric ones do? They only need to be able to move the snow from behind the cars and the two walkways). I have some ideas for Ellie, but I’m nervous it won’t be perfect.

Most of my friends will be waiting till after Christmas, so I don’t have to be as stressed about them, but I at least need some ideas!! People, give me ideas either for yourself or for common friends (that DON’T involve me or userinfowtbrosie in any state of undress, sorry userinfobrontosproximo) :-P

Okay, not the scouts themselves, but my ‘co-leaders’ (and I use the term VERY loosely).

The troop I am involved with is a multi-level troop (5-17 year olds) that is affiliated with Campus Girl Scouts. The only reason there are leaders outside of CGS themselves is because of the number of girls. Because of this, they need to be active in the troop and we need to be active in their activities. Yet I never know about what CGS is doing or planning until almost the last minute. Case in point, an email received by the 3 leaders about a play “CGS would LOVE for us to be able to help out at” being put on Saturday. Um, hello, you KNOW we have a fundraising activity that day, and way to let us know on Tuesday about an event Saturday when we have limited access to contacting our girls (one of the issues with having an inner-city troop). Turns out one of my co-leaders knew about it for our meeting 2 weeks ago, but had a family emergency and couldn’t attend the meeting. Fine, awesome. But where was the email/text/phone call to either myself or M about the event?

It’s all about keeping the lines of communication open and not counting on one person alone to be the liaison. And when I suggest the leaders being included in minutes from the CGS meetings, I get told I’m “being demanding and that we have more important issues.”

Next year I will not be involved with a troop that falls under CGS.

So I just heard back from my insurance company. There is water in the engine, so it’s been deemed a total loss. And of course the person that called me is just the “break the news to you” guy so I have no idea what’s really going to be happening now. I have to wait for the Total Loss Dept to contact me with more information.

I had such an amazing weekend with Ellie too. I’m trying to not stress about it all, but I am.

About 8:30 yesterday morning I decided to risk driving into the lake that Lexington St had become in order to drive through the parking lot to the other side. I almost made it too, but some asshat in a pickup went careening by me, sending a wave over the top of my car–and I stalled. My car was literally floating around in the wake of this guy’s truck, and the wakes of other asshats that insisted on driving through the lake despite seeing several stranded cars. I called AAA and was on the phone with them for a good20 minutes as the water is pouring into my car–it got as high as my front seats by the time I was done, but the rain was coming down too hard for me to want to try getting out while still talking to AAA.Getting out of the car proved to also be a problem–the water was actually rushing, and it was almost up to my waist. I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous and incredibly stressed out about the whole thing.

Fast forward an hour and a half of chatting with the plaza employees, other stranded motorists and the fire people and AAA picked me up. The tow guy told me that the 40 of them on duty couldn’t keep up with all the calls–and they aren’t the only tow people in town! It was a mess out there, and was for a long time. I had him bring me to work so I had a nice safe, dry place to talk to the insurance company and worked out all the details.

Thank the gods that my insurance is covering the damage (minus my deductible), and my car is currently at the shop (I’m waiting to hear from them regarding the damage and estimates and all). When I finally got into work my boss said that I have the worst luck with my car. I’m starting to agree with her and am seriously contemplating getting rid of it when I get to grad school if I can get a live-on position.
